This manual describes the basic configuration of Submersible Motor Engineering Subsea Motor.
This equipment Consists of a Subsea Motor and may or may not include various ancillary equipment dependant on the specifics of the Scope of Supply. Refer to Job Specific Drawings for exact details of the supplied equipment.
Most injuries that occur during operation and maintenance of equipment are due to failure to observe basic safety rules and take adequate precautions.
Personnel must be trained to recognise and avoid potential hazards and to perform their work using appropriate methods and tools.
The Subsea Motor must be operated only by personnel that are familiar with and fully understand the information given in the user manual.
Always read the User Manual in its entirety and follow all instructions before starting-up the motor for the first time.
Before installing, using or maintaining Subsea Motors or its sub-assemblies, first read the specific instructions for these parts. These instructions can be found in the additional documents supplied with the user manual or by contacting the Manufacturer.
Ensure sufficient filling of the Subsea Motor before starting-up to prevent Water Ingress.
The Motor and its sub-assemblies and components should only be lifted using certified lifting equipment, which is in good condition.
Safety helmets, boots and goggles must be worn when operating or performing maintenance on the Motor.
Observe national and local safety regulations relating to the Motor’s operation and environment as well as any specific instruction given in this manual.
CONSTRUCTION
The Equipment consists of a Subsea Motor and may or may not include other ancillary equipment and is designed to be mounted to a rigid frame to withstand the forces caused by start-up.
The Subsea Motor designed to perform according to the Motor Performance Curves graphs listed in additional the documents.
The Subsea Motor is a tool that can be utilised in many Subsea Applications.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
The Subsea motor will function properly during operation above the water line although this is likely to cause overheating in the motor quickly which may cause a catastrophic failure if the temperature is not monitored.
The motor is designed to operate continuously whilst fully submerged.
POST–DELIVERY INSPECTION
- Examine the exterior of the Subsea Motor unit for loose fasteners, oil leaks and damage.
- Inspect castings and weld areas for cracks and dents. SME must be contacted immediately if any such damage is discovered. The pump must not then be operated until SME have given their approval.
- Check that there are no rags or packaging materials obstructing the motors operation.
- Check that the flange’s faces of the Subsea Motor are in good condition.
- Most Subsea Motors are delivered from the factory without the necessary lubricants. As a precaution the presence, condition and levels of these fluids must be checked before attempting to operate the Motor.
- The correction of most of the foregoing potential faults must be well within the capabilities of a competent service mechanic. The customer is encouraged to contact SME at the first instance if he feels unsure of how any such tasks must be undertaken.
SUBSEA PUMP UNIT
The Driven Equipment is directly mounted to the Subsea Motor. The unit may or may not be fitted with ancillary equipment such as Heat Exchangers, Circulation Pumps and Specific Instrumentation.
The mounting frame or bed used to support the pump must be sufficiently strong to withstand the static/dynamic loads generated by the Subsea Motor and Driven Equipment.
TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE
Transportation
The Subsea Motor must be transported and stored in a horizontal position with sufficient supports and/or chocks to prevent it from moving.
Storage
When the Motor is to be taken out of service for more than two (2) months the following precautions should be taken as a minimum:
Flush any solids out of the dredge pump and its suction/ discharge pipes.
Remove all water from the pump’s impeller housing especially when freezing temperatures are common in the area the pump is stored.
When the Subsea Motor is taken into operation after a prolonged storage period the Motor and Mechanical Seal Cavities should be drained and filled with the appropriate oil.
Any routine service tasks that were due before the unit was put into storage shall also be performed.
TESTS AND ADJUSTMENTS
The Subsea pump and Ancillary Equipment are thoroughly tested at the manufacturers test site. Any checks and tests should be compared against original test reports to ensure results have not deviated from Manufacturers prescribed results.
The operator of the Subsea Motor must be thoroughly familiar with all the features and operating instructions before putting the Motor into operation.
START–UP
Before starting-up the Subsea Motor perform daily checks and electrical inspection procedures.
Do not start the unit unless it is completely submerged below the water line.
GENERAL DIRECTIONS
Read this chapter carefully and ensure to fully understand it before performing maintenance and/or repair on this product.
The power supply to the Subsea Motor and its ancillaries must be locked in the off position before any inspection, maintenance or repair work is attempted
The Subsea Motor operator and maintenance personnel are strongly advised to adopt a regular routine of inspection and preventive maintenance on the unit. It is often found that a “don’t repair it until it breaks down” philosophy results in lower and less predictable availability of the machine along with higher repair costs.
Always disengage the Motors driven Equipment before performing any inspection, maintenance or repair to the unit or its components.
Local operating conditions may require changes to the content and frequency of some maintenance tasks.
Be aware of the following safety precautions.
Most accidents involving production operation, maintenance and repair are caused by failure observing the basic safety rules or taking precautions.
Accidents often can be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations.
People must be alert to possible hazards and need to have the necessary training skills and tools to perform their functions properly.
NEVER work on the Motor and its Ancillary Equipment while it is in operation. ALWAYS shutdown the drive and secure the motor from being operated.
PERIODICAL MAINTENANCE
Subsea Motor unit
The unit must be inspected according to the minimum requirements of the Maintenance Schedule before starting operations. Look in particular for:
- Water and lubricant leaks
- Loose or damaged fasteners
- Worn, cracked or split pipes
These defects must be repaired immediately.
Weekly
- Visual inspection of Motor exterior
- Check for oil & water leaks
- Check for loose fasteners
Daily or Often as Possible
Check oil level in Subsea Motor.
The Subsea Compensator(Customer Supply) should be fitted to one of the Oil In and Out points on the motor and the compensator should provide an indication of the oil level in the Motor.
Recommended oils
SME recommends Shell Tellus 22 Oil. On a practical level quite often the Oil installed in the Hydraulic Systems is generally required to be used as the Lubricant and Compensation oil in the Subsea Motor. The type and range of these oils is very broad and SME will be pleased to review the type of Oil requested to be used in the Operation of the Subsea Motor and Pump for its suitability. Generally equivalent oil types may be used.
Never mix different types of oils.
Submersible Motor Engineering Pty Ltd aims at manufacturing environment-friendly products. To extend the Subsea Motor’s life the spare parts are for sale for a period of at least 10 years.
When the Motor is written off, it can be converted into scrap.
When a Subsea Motor or parts of it are dismantled, waste materials should be separated as follows:
Tap the oil from the motor drain(s) and submit it as chemical waste to a local chemical waste collector/depot.
Plastics should be submitted to a local chemical waste collector/depot.
Steel (alloys) should be submitted to a local collection depot.
All other metals (copper and aluminium alloys) should be submitted separately to a local collection depot.
